Day 01

Kathmandu Altitude: 1,400m/ 4,593ft

On this day of your exciting Himalayan endeavor package, you will land at Tribhuvan International Airport. A representative from Regal Nepal will be already present at the airport to receive you.

The representative will then transport you to your booked hotel at the heart of the capital valley. After checking in, get some rest and in the evening you will have enough time to take stroll around the vibrant city.

Day 02

Kathmandu Altitude: 1,400m/ 4,593ft

This will be a trek preparation day in your Everest Base Camp via Gokyo Lakes itinerary. On this day, you will also do some sightseeing around the popular UNESCO World Heritage Sites for about half a day.

Meanwhile, Regal Nepal will oversee all the arrangements and collect the permits required for your trip. If you have yet to complete shopping for clothes and gear for the trek, we suggest you do it in Kathmandu as the cost is higher on the mountain.

Day 03

Lukla Altitude: 2,860m/ 9,383ft

Phakding Altitude: 2,610m/ 8,562ft

You will get started on the thrilling trails of the Everest region finally on this day. After a scenic morning flight from Kathmandu admiring the diverse landscape of the country and the pristine Himalayas you will land at Lukla.

At Lukla you will enjoy your breakfast, enjoying the epic mountain views and then prepare for the trekking route up ahead. You will first make your descent across Chaurikharka Village to the bank of Dudh Koshi River.

Enjoying the charming and lush beauty of the river at the banks of the cascading river, you will then trek past the Ghat Village to reach Pakding.

Day 04

Namche Altitude: 3,440m/ 11,285ft

This day’s trail is one of the most exciting parts of the Everest Base Camp via Gokyo Lakes and Cho La Trek, as you will enter the lush part of the trail and the popular Sherpa capital. After breakfast at Phakding, you will continue following the trails of Dudh Koshi and cross multiple suspension bridges, including the popular Hillary Suspension Bridge.

Then, you will join the trails inside the Sagarmath National Park from Monjo, which is also the park’s checkpoint. The trail from the park inclines steeply with breathtaking views of the easter Himalayan peaks, including the first view of Everest.

You will continue across Namche Ukalo and then enter the vibrant Himalayan Sherpa town. There are a lot of cafes, pubs and restaurants that you can explore after reaching Namche. This is the biggest town in the Everest Base Camp Trek route.

Day 05

Namche Altitude: 3,440m/ 11,285ft

This is the first day of acclimatization in your Everest Base Camp via Gokyo Lakes itinerary. As you have already climbed to major altitudes, you will give your body time to rest at this popular Sherpa town before heading further.

There are tons of activities that you can do during your acclimatization day at Namche. You can explore the Everest View Hotel, Khumjung and Khunde Villages, and Syangboche Airstrip for the morning acclimatization hike.

As for the remaining part of the day, you can leisurely explore the other popular highlights of the region, such as Hillary School, Sherpa Culture Museum, Sagarmatha National Park Visitor Center and local pubs and restaurants.

Day 06

Dole Altitude: 4,200m/ 13,270ft

Altitude Gain: 760m/ 2,493ft

Steering off from the mainstream Everest Base Camp Trek route, you will first explore the wilderness part of the Everest region. After enjoying your breakfast at Namche Bazaar, you will move along the rocky trails with many uphill and downhill sections to reach Mong La Pass (3,957m).

It will take you about two hours to reach the pass on the ascending route. From here, you will then continue moving along the exciting trail, enjoying the majestic views of Khumbila and Ama Dablam.

Then, the descending section will take you across the pine and rhododendron forest to Phortse Tenga, a beautiful Sherpa village at the riverside. After a short walk from the riverside village, immersing in the solitary ambiance, you will finally reach Dole Village

Trek Distance: 11km/ 6.8 miles

Day 07

Machhermo Altitude: 4,470m/ 14,450ft

Altitude Gain: 270m/ 885ft

Pushing further on the elevation trails to Gokyo Lakes, you will climb above the Dole Village, which will take you across beautiful yak pastures. This day’s trail will unveil the mesmerizing up-close views of Thamseku, Kantega and Cho Oyu as you keep moving higher.

The higher part of the trail has more rocky surfaces and fewer plants. Counting further, you will pass through the small settlement of Lhafarma to reach the Luza Valley, which is situated on the side part of the valley.

From Luza, you will walk on the bank of Duhd Koshi and cross the river. You will continue walking on the sandy banks of the river to reach the Machhermo Village. This is the last big village before Gojkyo and there is also a Himalayan Rescue Hospital in this village.

Day 08

Gokyo Altitude: 4,790m/ 15,584ft

Altitude Gain: 320m/ 1,049ft

It is finally time to explore the first major highlight of this Everest Base Camp via Gokyo Lakes and Cho La Trek. After eating your breakfast at Machhermo, you will climb a ridge with excellent views of Cho Oyu and Kantega Valley.

The trail then continues across Phangkha Village, and you will make your descent on the river bank before proceeding toward the moraine of the Ngozumpa Glacier. Continuing on the terminal moraine of the glacier, you will cross a stream over an iron bridge, which will lead you toward the first lake of the series, Longpongo.

Then, after passing the second lake, Taboche Tsho, you will reach the third lake where there is a resting settlement, Gokyo Village. The shimmering turquoise blue water surface and the epic view of Cho Oyu on the backdrop will create a heavenly atmosphere.

Day 09

Gokyo Ri Altitude: 5,357m/ 17,575ft

Altitude Gain: 567m/ 1,860ft

Before heading toward the next part of the trail, you will use this day to soak in the mesmerizing atmosphere of the sacred lakes. You can also take part in an optional hike to Gokyo Ri, which is known to provide fantastic views of Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Cho Oyu and other majestic peaks.

On this rest day you can also explore the fourth lake, Thonak Tsho and the fifth lake, Ngozumba Tsho. The hikes to these higher lakes will reward you with stunning views of the Ngozumpa Glacier.

For the remaining part of the day, you can take your time to just stroll around the beautiful village, learning more about their culture, tradition and lifestyle.

Day 10

Thagnak Altitude: 4,700m/ 15,400ft

Altitude Loss: 90m/ 295ft

After completing the exploration of the Gokyo Lakes, it is time to move toward the other highlights of this Himalayan journey. After a warm and delicious breakfast at Gokyo Village, you will continue walking on the moraines of the Ngozumpa Glacier, enjoying the beautiful vistas of the pristine peaks.

Although this is a short day’s hike, you will need to trek across several ups and downs along the trail. During the last part of the trail, you will walk on the edge of the mountain to reach Thagnak Village.

This high-altitude Sherpa village sits at the side of the Ngozumpa Glacier and is a perfect rest stop before taking the high Himalayan pass, Cho La Pass.

Day 11

Cho La Pass Altitude: 5,420m/ 17,782ft

Dzongla Altitude: 4,855m/ 15,930ft

Altitude Gain: 720m/ 2,362ft

To join the mainstream Everest Base Camp Trek route from the tranquil valley of lakes, you will need to cross the thrilling Cho La Pass. Although the pass itself is not difficult, the steep section and the route that passes across the glacier on the eastern side can be a little physically demanding.

After leaving Thagnak, you will head toward the Phedi, from where the path ascends across rocky trails and a ravine. The path on the side of the frozen lake will lead toward the top of the pass, which is decorated with praying flags.

From the very top, you will be able to catch the astonishing views of Everest, Cho Oyu, Makalu, Lhotse, Pumori, Nuptse, Baruntse, Ama Dablam and several others. Then, following the descending path across some crevasses, you will finally reach the Dzongla Village.

Day 12

Lobuche Altitude: 4,940m/ 16,210ft

Altitude Gain: 85m/ 278ft

On this short day’s trekking adventure, you will re-join the mainstream Everest Base Camp Trek route. After eating your breakfast and enjoying the views of the surrounding peaks, you will then make your descent on the grassy trail.

Switching to the glacier moraine route, you will descend along Chola Lake and follow the trail at the side of Khumbu Glacier. Unlike the previous day’s path across the high Himalayan pass, it will be a pleasant walk on this day.

During the final part of the trail, you will move along the Imja Khola before reaching the Lobuhce Village from where you will be joining the classical EBC Trek route.

Day 13

Gorak Shep Altitude: 5,164m/ 16,942ft

Everest Base Camp Altitude: 5,364m/ 17,598ft

As you have already explored two of the major highlights of the Everest Base Camp via Gokyo Lakes itinerary, this day’s trail will lead you to the final and most epic landmark in this mainstream trekking region.

After breakfast at Lobuche, you will continue straight on the route and trek across rocky dunes, streams and moraines of glaciers to reach Gorak Shep. You will take a short break here and leave your luggage to continue walking toward Everest Base Camp.

Admiring the beauty of the Himalayas beneath the highest peak in the world will be something of an otherworldly and spiritually awakening experience. You will take your time to immerse in the magical atmosphere of the Himalayas and then, you will return back to Gorak Shep for an overnight stay.

Day 14

Kala Patthar Altitude: 5,644m/ 18,517ft

Pheriche Altitude: 4,371m/ 14,340ft

Altitude Gain: 480m/ 1,574ft

It is said that the exploration of the Everest Base Camp is not complete without the hike to Kala Patthar. As the views of the surrounding mountains are not clear from the base camp, this hiking point offers a clear 360° panoramic perspective.

The vantage point of Kala Patthar will unveil the epis views of Khumbu Icefall, Khumbu Glacier and views of surrounding peaks such as Everest, Changtse, Nuptse, Thamserku, Taboche, Lobuche and other adjacent mountains.

After the morning hike, you will walk back to Gorak Shep for breakfast and then make your descend to Pheriche for an overnight stay.

Day 15

Namche Altitude: 3,440m/ 11,285ft

Altitude Loss: 931m/ 3,054ft

From Pheriche, as you descend further, you will be welcomed by the lush scenery again. The hillside blanketed with juniper, rhododendron trees and lush greenery will add excitement to your trekking journey.

Following the pleasant and easy descending route, you will reach the Tengboche Monastery. You will then continue moving further down the exciting trail to reach Sansa Village.

Then, the route on the final section across Dudh Koshi through thick woodland of rhododendrons and pine trees will bring you back to the Sherpa capital.

Day 16

Lukla Altitude: 2,860m/ 9,383ft

Altitude Loss: 580m/ 1,902ft

This will be the last day of trekking of your Everest Base Camp via Gokyo Lakes itinerary. After a delicious breakfast in Namche, you will move along the steep trail across beautiful settlements and lush woodlands.

Following the trails alongside the bank of Dudh Koshi, you will cross several thrilling suspension bridges and leave the premises of Sagarmatha National Park. A last uphill ascend from the river bank and across Chaurikhaka Village will bring you back to Lukla.

Day 17

Bidding farewell to this mainstream trekking destination, you will take a morning flight from Lukla heading back to Kathmandu. Admiring the bird-eye views of the snow-clad peaks and flying over the lush valleys, you will make your return to Kathmandu.

You will take a morning flight on this day and after landing in Kathmandu, we will drop you off at your respective hotel. For the day part ther will be ample time to explore the vibrant city and buy souvenirs to remember your journey.

Day 18

After completion of your Everest Base Camp Trek via Gokyo Lakes, it is finally time to part ways with this beautiful Himalayan country. A representative from Regal Nepal will come to receive you at your hotel and help you with the check-out procedure.

Then, you will be swiftly transported to Tribhuvan International Airport for your international departure. Make the arrangement to reach at least 3 to 4 hours before your scheduled flight, which is recommended.

Preparation Before Trek

Everest Base Camp and Gokyo Lakes Trek map will take you across some of the major high-altitude points in the Himalayas as well as rugged terrains. Thus, to overcome the physical demands of the trail, you will require a good level of physical strength.

A basic level of fitness will be enough but you will have to make an adequate level of preparation for the trip. Normally, for high-altitude trekking adventures in Nepal, the generally recommended training period is 3 to 6 weeks.

You should include a good level of cardio, strength and endurance exercises during this training period for an optimum result. It will be best if you stay consistent with the training so you will find it more comfortable moving along the rugged mountain terrain.

**Note: To understand the steep terrains better, you can do some practice hikes on a nearby hill carrying your backpack with some weight. This is one of the most efficient ways to prepare for the high altitude treks**

Permit and Fee

You will gain a significant altitude as you follow the exciting Everest Base Camp and Gokyo Lakes Trek map. After getting started on the trekking trail of this duo highlight adventure from Lukla (2,860m), you will gradually climb to higher altitudes.

The notable altitude points during this trek are Gokyo (4,790m), Gokyo Ri (5,357m), Lobuche (4,940m), Gorak Shep (5,164m), Everest Base Camp (5,364m), Kala Patthar (5,644m) and Cho La Pass (5,420m). You will gain an overall altitude of 2,784m (9,133ft) from the starting point to the highest point of the route.

Although the altitude gain isn’t that major and the only risk of altitude sickness in this route is Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), you will still need to stick with the necessary precautionary steps to avoid any kind of inconvenience.

No, there isn’t any kind of age limit for this trek. If you have basic fitness and good health, it will be sufficient to take part in this exploration. 

Although having some prior trekking experience will certainly be helpful, even complete beginners can do this trek. Just make sure to train right for the trek and make the necessary preparations to make the experience comfortable. 

From this popular viewpoint of Gokyo Valley, you will be able to catch the stunning views of mountain peaks such as Lhotse, Makalu, Everest, Lhotse and several others, including the picturesque views of Ngozumpa Glacier (the longest glacier in the Himalayas).

The shortest trekking route to Gokyo Ri is via Lukla. After landing at Lukla and crossing Namche Bazaar, you can trek straight to Gokyo Lakes via Phortse Thanga and Machhermo. 

From Lukla, after crossing the Namche Bazaar, you will traverse across the remote villages of Phortse Thanga and Machhermo to reach Gokyo Lakes. You will have to trek for around 40 to 45 km (25 to 28 miles) to reach the Gokyo Lakes from Lukla. 

The number of days in the Gokyo Lakes Trek is 12 days. In case if you planning to combine your adventure with Everest Base Camp Trek, it can last from 18 to 20 days
