Who Can Do Upper Mustang Trek Nepal?

Day 01

Kathmandu Altitude: 1,400m/ 4,593ft

On your arrival at the Tribhuvan International Airport, our staff will come to receive you at the airport. From the airport, you will be swiftly transferred to your booked hotel. You can take some time to rest and then take your time to explore the beautiful vibrant capital city.

In the evening, you can visit Regal Nepal’s office located in Thamel, Kathmandu to gather more information about your trek. Overnight stay at hotel.

Day 02

Kathmandu Altitude: 1,400m/ 4,593ft

This is one of the exciting days of your Upper Mustang Trek itinerary. Before you set out on a journey to explore the Himalayas region, you will take your time to admire the beauty of this rich, historical, artistic and cultural capital valley.

There are also 7 UNESCO Sites located in Kathmandu. Although you won’t be able to tour all of them in a single day, you will have enough time to explore a selective few. After the sightseeing tour, you can move along with the preparation part.

If you have yet to complete your shopping, you can complete it on this day. Check your supplies and re-stock if necessary. Also, don’t forget to get enough rest as your adventure will start early the next day.

Day 03

Pokhara Altitude: 822m/ 2,696ft

Altitude Loss: 578m/ 1,896ft

Your adventure on this day will take you to one of the most highlighted tourist destinations in the country. Pokhara, also known as the city of lakes, is a remarkable tourist hub of Nepal that is known for its peaceful ambiance and epic mountain views.

Leaving the capital valley, you will head toward the west, following the cascading Marsyangdhi and Trishuli Rivers. This day’s thrilling drive will introduce you to the charming beauty of the country. Passing the lush hills, babbling rivers and waterfalls, terraced farms and vibrant settlements along the bankside, you will reach Pokhara city.

You will be able to catch the breathtaking views of Annapurna, Dhaulagiri and Machhpuchhre from this city as you set out on your evening stroll. Tonight, you will rest at one of the finest hotels in the city.

Day 04

Jomsom Altitude: 2,700m/ 8,858ft

Kagbeni Altitude: 2,858m/ 9,376ft

Altitude Gain: 2,036m/ 6,679ft

Today, you will finally start your adventure on the exciting trails of the second most popular trekking destination in the Himalayas. You will take a morning flight from Pokhara; under the clear climatic conditions, you will be able to catch the breathtaking views of Annapurna, Dhaulagiri and Machhpuchhre, including the deepest gorge in the world, Kali Gandaki Gorge.

This exciting flight will last approximate 25 minutes. After landing at Jomsom Bazaar, the district headquarters of Mustang, you will prepare for the trekking part up ahead. Jomsom is famous for its apple farms, high wind and arid landscape.

Following the dirt trail up ahead from this high-altitude settlement, you will continue proceeding further in the Kali Gandaki River Valley to reach the ancient trade post, Kagbeni. This village is located on the southern side restricted Upper Mustang and is also a checkpoint where your permits will be checked before you move further.

Day 05

Chele Altitude: 3,050m/ 10,006ft

Altitude Gain: 192m/ 629ft

After enjoying your breakfast at Kagnebin, you will begin your journey into the restricted part of the region. You will move alongside the east bank of the Kali Gandaki River and head toward the beautiful village of Chuksang.

As this region is known for the heavy high winds, you will move along this trail into the Chuksang Valley. On your trail, you will also be able to enjoy the spectacular views of Nilgiri. The trail up ahead keeps on stretching toward the east and you will keep pushing on th arid terrain to reach the Tangbe Village.

On this trail, you will pass the unique red sandstone pillar and fascinating rock formations of the Upper Mustang, which are famous highlights of this route. Tange is situated on the opposite bank of the Kali Gandaki and has red and whitewashed houses.

Moving further ahead on your trail, you will follow the narrow canyon to the beautiful Chele Village situated along the ridge. There are caves perched high up on the cliffs above the village and is believed to be the home of the ancient civilization residing here.

Day 06

Syangboche Altitude: 3,475m/ 11,400ft

Altitude Gain: 425m/ 1,394ft

Giving a continuum to the exploration of this forbidden kingdom, from Chele, you will climb a steep spur and canyon to reach Eklo Bhatti. This day’s adventure is both challenging and thrilling as you will cross beautiful passes in the trekking route: Taklam La Pass (3,624m) and Dajori La Pass (3,735m).

The path further ahead then takes you to the Samar Village, where the majestic views of Nilgiri will dazzle you. From this village, you will then switch to the descending part of a large gorge past the Rangchyung Chorten.

As the final section of the trail closes in, you will walk past the beautiful field and ridge to reach the Syangboche Village. This will be your rest destination on today’s trail.

Day 07

Ghyami Altitude: 3,520m/ 11,548ft

Altitude Gain: 45m/ 147ft

After a warm breakfast in Syangboche Village, you will continue ascending further. You will cross another pass, Yamda La Pass (3,845m), and move across the astonishing desert landscape and a few of remote settlements.

Then, the trail will ascend on a big side valley of Kali Gandaki. From there, you will descend to the barley field of the Geling Village. The houses in this village are painted with white and ochre colors, like in Mustang.

The route further ahead is slightly tough as you trek past the Tama Gaun and cross the Nyi La Pass (4,015m). You will then make your descent from the pass and make your way toward Ghyami Village.

Day 08

Charang Altitude: 3,500m/ 11,482ft

Altitude Loss: 20m/ 65 ft

This day’s trail takes you across the driest arid landscape of the Upper Mustang. Although the rough route can be slightly demanding, the views of the surreal landscape, village and mountains will make the walk worth it.

You will also cross a suspension bridge over the Ghami Khola as you move along with your trekking trails. The path in this section is decorated with praying flags and chortens to reach the section further ahead; you will then cross the Tsarang La Pass (3,870m).

Charang Village, also known as Tsarang, is situated at the top of the Charang Chu Canyon. There is a big medieval-period fort on the east side of the village. You can also visit the Red Gompa and the five-story Dzong Monastery, which have a wonderful collection of thankas and religious sculptures.

Day 09

Lo-Manthang Altitude: 3,700m/ 12,139ft

Altitude Gain: 200m/ 656ft

Finally, you will head toward the heart of the ancient kingdom. Today’s journey will take you to Lo Manthang, which was once the beautiful capital of the Kingdom of Lo. You will begin your trek descending from Charang to a canyon.

Then, crossing a river, you will traverse over the Lo La Pass (3,950m). From the top of this beautiful pass, the pristine Annapurna I, Nilgiri, Tilicho and other incredible central Himalayan peaks will add vibrance to your vista.

After descending from the pass, you will reach the beautiful walled village of Lo Manthang following a long mani wall.

Day 10

Lo-Manthang Altitude: 3,700m/ 12,139ft

As you have climbed to significant altitudes and have reached the heart of the ancient hidden kingdom, this will be the rest and exploration day of your Upper Mustang Trek itinerary. In the morning, you can do an acclimatization hike to Chhosar to enjoy the panoramic views of the surrounding peaks and Lo Manthang.

This beautiful walled ancient was built by Ame Pal during the 1380s approximately. The tall, whitewashed mud and brick walls, significant gompas and the five-story king’s palace, believed to have been built in 1400 are the major attractions of Lo Manthang.

During this acclimatization day, you can also explore the major gompas of the ancient kingdom like Jampa Gompa, Chodey Gompa, Thubchen Gompa and Choprang Gompa. Among all these gompas, Jampa is the oldest and is also known as god’s house.

Day 11

Drakmar Altitude: 3,810m/ 12,500ft

Altitude Gain: 110m/ 360ft

After completing your exciting exploration of the forbidden kingdom, instead of returning on the same route, you will take a slight detour in this thrilling Himalayan endeavor. From Lo Manthang, you will move along the ascending trail and cross the Chogo La Pass (4,320m).

You will then descend toward the Charang River and cross the river to reach Gyakar Village. There is a century-old monster here, Ghar Gompa which is decorated with beautiful rock painting. It is believed any wish is granted at this gompa. After exploring this gompa, you will then follow the descending trail toward the Drakmar Village.

Day 12

Ghiling Altitude: 3,806m/ 12,486ft

Altitude Loss: 4m/ 13ft

The trekking trails on this day consists of several ascending and descending sections. After enjoying your breakfast at Drakmar, you will trek across the beautiful settlements of Jhaite, Chhunggar and Tama Gaun.

Traversing across the hidden Buddhist kingdom of the Upper Mustang, you will then reach the long mani wall before heading toward Ghami Khola. After crossing the river, you will reach the Ghami Village, which is surrounded by high cliffs and caves.

After crossing Ghami La Pass (3,765m) and Nyi La Pass (4,015m), you will then reach the Ghiling Village. Although Ghiling is mostly dry, the views of Nilgiri and Dhaulagiri is spectacular from here.

Day 13

Chhuksang Altitude: 3,050m/ 10,006ft

Altitude Loss: 756m/ 2,480ft

Leaving the Ghiling Village behind, you will continue exploring the trails of the upper Mustang. During the initial part of this day’s trail, you will cross Syangboche La Pass (3,850m) and move along with the alternative tour to Chungsi Cave which is located near a gorge.

After exploring this ancient cave, you will cross a beautiful summer settlement and cross the Dajong La Pass (3,660m) and Taklam La Pass (3,624m) to reach Chhuksang Village across Chele Village.

Day 14

Jomsom Altitude: 2,700m/ 8,858ft

Altitude Loss: 350m/ 1,148ft

On this day’s trail, you will join the mainstream Annapurna Circuit Route as you move ahead from Chhuksang. After breakfast, you will continue with your descending trail across the charming landscape with sparkling mountain views on the backdrop.

You will follow the beautiful trails of the Kali Gandaki River Valley and trek past beautiful villages and monasteries. After crossing the Eklo Bhatti, you will then head toward Kagbeni. You will break here and enjoy your lunch, admiring the beautiful valley and mountains before heading toward Jomsom for an overnight stay.

Day 15

Pokhara Altitude: 822m/ 2,696ft

Altitude Loss: 1,878m/ 6,161ft

After completing your epic mountain journey, it is time for you to prepare for your return trip. Bidding farewell to the charming Himalayas, you will take a morning flight to Pokhara, enjoying epic aerial views. As you will be taking the morning flight, you will have enough time to explore the popular tourist destination during the day.

Check out the popular highlights of Pokhara, such as Shree Bindhyabasini Temple, Gupteshwor Mahadev Cace, Tala Barahi Temple, World Peace Pagoda, International Mountain Museum, etc. You can also take your time to just stroll around the peaceful lakeside and soak in its serenity.

Day 16

Kathmandu Altitude: 1,400m/ 4,593ft

Altitude Gain: 578m/ 1,896ft

It is finally time to make your return to Kathmandu. After enjoying a hearty breakfast at a lavish hotel in Pokhara, you will then begin your driving journey. Enjoying the incredible natural scenery, you will drive along the banks of Trishuli and Marsyangdhi Rivers for your triumph return.

This drive will last about 7 to 8 hours and after reaching Kathmandu, we will drop you back at your hotel. Even if this is a long day’s drive, you will still have enough time for an evening stroll, checking out the vibrant lightning in this beautiful capital.

Day 17

On this final day of the Upper Mustang Trek itinerary, you will part ways with this beautiful Himalayan nation. Our staff will drop you at the TIA for your international flight depending on the schedule of your flight.

 Preparation Before Trek

When it comes to doing high-altitude treks in the Himalayas, you should take the preparation part very seriously. With the right amount of preparation, doing the thrilling Himalayan endeavors, even if you don’t have high-altitude trekking experience, won’t be a big deal.

Normally, for the high-altitude treks in Nepal, the minimum recommended period of training is 3 to 6 weeks. However, considering your fitness level, you can adjust the period as per your preference. Although a basic level of fitness is considered to be sufficient for this trek, it is an inevitable fact that the more fit you are, the more comfortable your journey will be.

Altitude Sickness

If you are doing a high-altitude trekking adventure, you will certainly need to be careful about the risks associated with Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS).
