How Difficult is the Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek?

The Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek difficulty level is classified as moderate. Though this trek is physically more demanding, it does not involve any technical routes. So, you do not need to possess skills in rock or ice climbing, crevasse rescue etc. You also do not have to navigate the high passes with loose scree, exposed ridges and steep slopes. Day 01

Our Kanchenjunga Base Camp journey begins with a scenic flight from Kathmandu to Bhadrapur. After breakfast in the morning, we will board a domestic flight to the industrial town of Bhadrapur. With stunning aerial views of hills, valleys, rivers and the Himalayas, we will land on the flat lands of Terai.

After a short break, we will get into a vehicle to drive towards Illam, the destination of the day. We will head west on the Mechi Highway observing the mesmerizing vista of lush greenery, traditional settlements, terraced farming hills, etc. The picturesque drive to the mid hills passes through popular places such as Damak, Birtamode, Kachanakawal etc.

Finally, we will arrive at Ilam, with cool climate and scenic views of tea gardens.

Day 02

Taplejung Elevation: 1,820 meters / 5,971 feet

Drive Duration: 5 hours

From Illam we will head towards Taplejung today. On a scenic drive through winding hillsides and tea gardens, we will head northeast. The drive offers you a glimpse into the rural lifestyle of eastern Nepal. We will venture deep into the lush forests and terraced fields and pass popular spots like Phidim and Suketar.

Suketar is the headquarters of Tapejung and our destination is a short ride from here. Finally, we will arrive at the Taplejung, which is a gateway to the Kanchenjunga region adventures. The village also provides a magnificent view of the colossal Kanchenjunga range.

Day 03

Sekathum Elevation: 1,600 meters / 5,250 feet

Drive Duration: 6 hours

Today, we will finally reach the starting point of our trek. Leaving Taplejung after breakfast at the teahouse, we will drive towards Sekathum.

The narrow and winding hilly roads pass through the serene forests and cultural villages dotted with terraced farms. Gradually, the drives lead us through rough and unpaved rural roads. Eventually, we will arrive at Sekathum where we will spend a restful night.

Day 04

Amjilosa Elevation: 2,510 meters / 8,234 feet

Trek Duration: 5 hours

Finally, we will begin on the trail. Our trek starts from the village of Sekathum and heads towards Amjilosa. We will come out of Sekathum following the flat trails that gradually ascend through vibrant woods of rhododendrons alongside the Tamar River. We will cross this river via a suspension bridge and venture through narrow grassy slopes.

The incredible views of gratifying Himalayas like Jannu, Gyachung Kang and Kanchenjunga are seen in the background. The cascading waterfalls and streams mark your way towards Amjilosa. Jabari is a serene spot amidst the trek, where we will take a brief rest for lunch. Continuing further we will reach this day’s trek destination.

We will unwind at one of the finest teahouses in Amjilosa to recharge for the following day’s adventure.

Day 05

Gyabla Elevation: 2,730 meters / 8,956 feet

Trek Duration: 4 hours

From the Tibetan influenced village of Amjilosa, surrounded by the cardamom fields, we will set off on the trail to Gyabla. The trail meanders through dense forests and crosses paths with several enchanting waterfalls and streams. Then, we will ascend the ridge and navigate Ghunsa River via a wooden bridge.

We will enter a lush forest of oak and rhododendron trees along with bamboo grooves. The routes gradually become tough as you have to traverse switchbacks and rocky terrains. Moreover, there are a few landslide prone areas that you need to be cautious of. Trekking further, you will arrive at a giant waterfall at the river’s bank. This indicates that you are near the Sherpa village of Gyabla.

Upon reaching the village, you can enjoy a marvelous night in the teahouse.

Day 06

Ghunsa Elevation: 3,595 meters / 11,794 feet

Trek Duration: 4 hours

We will depart Gyabla Village after a nourishing breakfast. The trail towards Ghunsa follows the sandy banks of the Ghunsa River. Then, we will pass through the diverse vegetation, such as bamboo, rhododendron, etc.

After some walks, we will arrive at the quaint village of Phere. Religious landmarks like Monasteries, Mani walls and Praying Wheels mark the path forward. Following the uphill trails, we will finally reach the Sherpa settlement of Ghunsa. You can spend the night in the village soaking into the local culture and heritage

Day 07

We are on our first acclimatization day in Ghunsa. Today, we will spend time resting and exploring the surrounding areas of this village. The walks and short hikes will prepare our body to adjust to the increasing altitude of the journey.

After a leisure lunch you can set off to explore the Tibetan influenced culture and lifestyle of people, as well as nearby monasteries and other landmarks. Return to the teahouse around evening time for a delicious dinner and cozy sleep.

Day 08

Kambachen Elevation: 4,100 meters / 13,451 feet

Trek Duration: 4 hours

After an acclimatization day in Ghunsa, we will head towards Kambachen. We will pass through several tribal villages and forests teeming with a variety of flora and fauna.

The trails meander through the southern bank of the Ghunsa River lined the trees of rhododendrons, juniper and pine.The snow covered mountains like Jannu, Kumbhakarna, Temachungi and Wedge are visible from the route.

There are a few rockfall and landslide areas along the trail and wooden bridges you have to cross. Likewise, you will make your way through cascading waterfalls of melting snow from peaks and glacier ice.

Continuing further, you will ascend to Rampuk Kharka and keep up going steeply on the opposite side of the Kumbhakarna Glacier. Finally, we will arrive at Khambachen, a serene spot to rest, recover and spend the night.

Day 09

This is our second acclimatization day and we will explore the surrounding highlights of Kambachen today.

After fueling up with hearty meals, you can ramble around the village and visit local homes to connect with natives or take short acclimatization walks to the nearby hills. You can also ascend the Kumbhakarna viewpoint for the expansive panorama of the surrounding hills, valleys and Himalayas.

By evening, retreat to the teahouse for an enjoyable stay.

Day 10

Lhonak Elevation: 4,785 meters / 15,698 feet

Trek Duration: 4 hours

After well rested and acclimatized, we will continue on our trek and head for another village of Lhonak. We will descend through the Ghunsa riverbed, enjoying the captivating views of Kanchenjunga, Gimmigela, Ramtang, etc, at the backdrop. Then we will cross the river on a bridge and trek across rocky fields and boulders.

Ramtang Monastery is a highlight of the trek, providing a serene spiritual atmosphere.

Slowly, we will head up the treeline and reach the wide and open valley with spanning views of the Himalayas, semi arid terrains and glaciers. This scenario will offer a unique topographical taste to your adventure.

Navigating the alpine terrains, a wide sandy plain welcomes you to the charming settlement of Lhonak. It is our resting spot for tonight.

Day 11

Kanchenjunga Base Camp Elevation: 5,143 meters/ 16,873 feet

Trek Duration: 8 hours

Today, we will reach our ultimate destination: the base camp of giant Kanchenjunga. The gradually ascending eastward trails from Lhonak will pass us through the Lhonak Glacier moraines. The routes are complex, involving rocky boulders, glacial deposits and icy patches. However, the sparse blossoms of rhododendrons and scattered wildflowers on the serene terrains make your journey enjoyable.

Next, the crossing of the ice lakes and glaciated streams makes your way towards the Kanchenjunga Glacier and finally to the North Base Camp of Mount Kanchenjunga. From the Kanchenjunga Base Camp height of 5,143 meters, the views of the Himalayan glaciers and snow covered peaks are spell binding.

After enjoying the views, we will revisit our path leading back to Lhonak. This is our second glorious night in this scenic village.

Day 12

Ghunsa Elevation: 3,595 meters / 11,794 feet

Trek Duration: 7 hours

From now on we will begin our return journey to the starting point of the trek, which also marks the ending point. We will start to retrace our footsteps from Ghunsa, traversing the diverse terrains of the Kanchenjunga region.

Most of the time, we will descend through the routes. We will pass the picturesque settlement of Khambachen one more time. Finally, we will get back to Ghunsa taking in a different perspective of the region along the way.

Day 13

Amjilosa Elevation: 2,510 meters / 8,234 feet

Trek Duration: 7 hours

From Ghunsa, we will continue to descend towards Amjilosa. We will follow the same path as we took earlier, passing through a quaint village of Gyabla.

After several small ascends and descends on the picturesque hilly terrains we will arrive at Amjilosa for a peaceful overnight stay.

Day 14

Sekathum Elevation: 1,600 meters / 5,250 feet

Trek Duration: 5 hours

Our return journey continues. Today, we will leave Amjilosa and head for Sekathum. After waking up with a gentle morning sunrise, we will enjoy a month watering breakfast before we leave for our destination.

Immersing in the views that we could have missed during our previous ascending journey, we will descend through the same routes to return to Sekathum.

Day 15

Trek Duration: 3 to 4 hours

Drive Duration: 7 to 8 hours

Today, our first part of the adventure is the ending trek to Sekathum and the next part is the return drive to Bhadrapur. This time, we won’t take a vehicle as before to travel between Sekathum and Taplejung. Rather, we will explore the region on foot.

The enchanting walks through the mesmerizing hilly terrains will shortly take you to Sekathum, where you will get a vehicle to drive to Bhadrapur. The ride will take you through hills, tea gardens, cardamom farms, forests, rivers, towns and villages. Finally, you will reach the flatlands of Bhadrapur.

After arriving in Bhadrapur, we will settle in at one of the nice hotels for the night.

Day 16

Flight Duration: 45 minutes

As our exhilarating journey of Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek has finally ended, we will return to the capital city of Kathmandu. As per the flight schedule you can explore the surrounding areas of the town or relax at the hotel before flying to Kathmandu.

We will board a plane and depart from Bhadrapur. After landing at the Tribhuvan International Airport, we will proceed to the domestic arrival gate. Outside, there will be a vehicle on standby for your swift transfer to the designated place of stay (hotel).

For the rest of the time, you can explore the historic city of Kathmandu by visiting its cultural sites and traditional cafes and restaurants. You can also buy gifts and souvenirs back home and do last minute shopping for your next journey, which probably would be a homeward flight.

The rooms in teahouses come on a shared basis with two to three adjacent beds. Likewise, toilets are mostly traditional squat styles and communal. When you get near the remote and inhabited areas, such as the base camp of Kanchenjunga, you will spend nights in roomy tents with thick sleeping mats, cozy sleeping bags and puffy pillows.

Required Permits for this Adventure

Kanchenjunga is a restricted trekking region and you cannot access its location for trekking until you get a special Restricted Area Permit. There are two permits essential for the Kanchenjunga Base Camp trek, which are:

  • Kanchenjunga Conservation Area Project (KCAP) Permit
  • Kanchenjunga Restricted Area Permit (KRAP)

The cost of KCAP permit is NPR 2,000 per person. KRAP is valid for one week, which costs you USD 20 per person for the first 28 days. After that, you will have to pay an additional USD 5 per person per week until you exit the restricted region.

You cannot apply for the KRAP on your own. You should opt for a guided tour from a registered trekking agency. To obtain this permit, you should be at least a group of two people. However, if you are traveling alone, we can place you in a particular group and get you the local area permit.
