Additional Info

Possibility of Altitude Sickness During the Tibet Tour

Altitude sickness is a concerning factor during the overland Tibet tour. This is because most of the places that you visit in Tibet are situated at high elevations. You will be over 4,000 meters in elevation from day 2 of the journey. Plus, you will spend multiple days at over 3,500 meters altitudes.

Moreover, visiting the Yamdrok Lake, sitting at 4,441 meters and driving through the Gyatso La Pass (5,220 meters) will introduce you to the breathtaking heights. While the symptoms of altitude sickness are usually seen after going up from 2,500 meters, there is a significant chance of being affected by it during this high altitude tour.

The risk of altitude sickness increases the more you reach the higher elevations because of the thinness of the air and low levels of oxygens. The common altitude symptoms are headache, lightheadedness, fatigue, breathlessness, sleeplessness, nausea, etc. To prevent it, you have to explore at a relaxed pace, stay well hydrated, eat fresh and healthy and avoid smoking and alcohol.

If you have any pre existing health issues or worries of altitude sickness, it is better to consult a doctor before setting off on the journey. You can take a diamox pill as per the healthcare professional’s prescription, which helps to prevent altitude sickness

Is Travel Insurance Required for the Tibet Tour?

Yes, travel insurance is essential while traveling to Tibet. It is because several unforeseen happenings can arise on the way. The remote and high altitude locations and variable weather conditions are the main factors of concern during the Tibet tour.

Most of the places that you will explore in Tibet are located in remote and rugged alpine areas. You have to walk several steps on foot to reach the viewpoints and landmarks after exiting a vehicle. So, you can be at risk of accidents and injuries when you have to navigate through the rough terrains.

Likewise, the possibility of altitude sickness is prevalent as the tour takes place at high altitudes in Tibet. And you may require immediate medical care if the sickness becomes severe. Moreover, the temperature in Tibet is chilly and this may lead to cold related illnesses.

All medical emergencies and expenses related to it are taken care of by your travel insurance. Furthermore, an extensive insurance policy even provides the benefit of a quick helicopter rescue and evacuation in the event of serious illness or injury.

On the other hand, the alpine regions experience uncertain weather and temperature fluctuations. Likewise, during the tour, you may unexpectedly be struck with natural calamities like landslides, floods, storms etc. Such adverse weather conditions can lead to delays in your journey and the worst case scenarios may even result in cancellations. However, with travel insurance in place, you can get reimbursement for your non refundable tour costs in case of such unfortunate happenings.

Besides these, travel insurance handles delayed, lost or stolen baggage. To sum up, travel insurance provides you with financial protection and peace of mind during the tour. Feeling safe and protected allows you to immerse fully in the journey.
